Am looking at 1901 census - RG13/2419 folio 179. I believe the Civil Parish says East Dean and the Administrative County says Gloucestershire. Can only find East Dean in Hampshire (just over border from Wiltshire). I don't know the area at all - please does anyone know if this is the same place? Maybe there was a county border change in this area? Thanks to anyone who can help! Maz. XX

Following Richard in Perth's tip - to look at the National Archives website - I did, and found this: Registration Sub-District: East Dean Civil Parish, Township or Place: Bilson (part) Drybrook East Dean (part) Little Dean Nailbridge Plump Hill Puddlebrook Upper Lydbrook Woodside (part) Brenda PS You do know me really, Maz, and with luck I'll be back at the East of London fair in January 2006.

East Dean is in Gloucestershire, it is part of the Forest of Dean.

Thank you very much Barbara, Merry and Twinkle. Sorry to be so ignorant about this part of the country!!! (well, most of it outside the South East I'm ashamed to say!) Maz. XX

Just incase you are looking for baptisms I can add that this is quite near the Herefordshire border. I have folk born in East Dean, Gloucestershire and christened just down the hill in the nearest church, which is over the county boundary and in Herefordshire.
