My Dearlove ancester was born in the 1840's in Reading, Berkshire. His father, according to the census, was also born there. There is no trace of marriage or birth on the IGI. Where do I look next? Is there a logical way of taking this family back any further? I would be greatful for advice on how to search records that are not on-line. Thank you. Vicky

First check the IGI coverage to see whether it actually covers the parishes where you think your family were born, via http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.*com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm If it does and your people aren't recorded try using Genuki to see what other parishes surround the one you've searched and look at those on the IGI If the parishes aren't covered, or even if they are because its good practise to check original sources you'll need to access the registers through the county records office If you can't visit the CRO: The family history society for the area may do a look up service, or publish register transcripts. Your local LDS family history centre may be able to order registers on microfiche if you can get to London try the Society of Genealogists library - they have a very good coverage of register transcripts and original registers on microfiche Someone on this site may have access to registers on CD or microfiche or be able to visit the records office for you. Good hunting

Have you tried double checking that their isn't anything on the IGI by cross referencing through Hugh Wallis - I couldn't find several of my rellies just by searching, but going in via county, then parish managed to find several of them. Just a thought Trudy

Hi Ruby, there are other sites online you can try first. The first 1 is free and 1837 and ancestry are pay to view ( you buy credits) http://freebmd(.)rootsweb(.)com(/)cgi(/)search(.)pl http://content(.)ancestry(.)co(.)uk/browse(/)list(.)aspx?dbid(=)8860&=path http://www(.)1837online(.)com remove all brackets. I have already looked and there are Dearlove surnames born Reading on these sites. If you have the option there is always the Berkshire Records office in Reading. Best wishes Hilary

Thank you for all your suggestions. The family of James and Mary Dearlove are partially listed on IGI. Their first child (?) called James of 1840 only lived a month. The invoice for his burial at St Laurences set me off trying to find out more about the family. I would like to find out more about James and Mary. Partly because I feel I should know more about a family that treasured a burial invoice, possibly their only physical thing relating to their first son. I think James and Mary may have been exceptionally unlucky, only having 4 children(?) and bringing up 2 beyond infancy. James Senior, according to the 1851 census a gentleman kindly found for me, indicates he was born in c.1805 in Reading. His wife Mary was born in c.1809, also in Reading. Their known children, details based on IGI and FreeBMD are: James 1840-1840 James 1843 - post 1881 (no offspring?) Charles 1847-1848 Charles Richard 1849-1897? (one son, 2 daughters?) This line of Dearloves is coming to an end and I want to know if James Senior had any siblings! Regards Vicky

Thank you Gloria. I think the info on Charles Jnr is the same as I picked up on. Verification is appreciated. Esta, I have only recently found out my Dearloves moved away from Reading by 1851. I think you could well have found them in 1861 for which I am most grateful. Any further details you find are much appreciated. I am wondering what James Seniors background was. Reading is not known for it's dairy herds! At the time of baby James' birth in 1840, the family lived in Regents Wharf, Reading. Baby James was buried at St Laurences Parish, but christened at ST GILES - 3 parishes cover the center of Reading (St Mary's is the other one). I do not think I found James and Mary on the 1841 census. James' son Charles Richard Dearlove of c.1849 became a butcher in Islington/Hayes. His elder brother, James c.1843, I think became the publican in the Acton census for 1881. Many thanks Vicky

Esta, You are amazing. Jane, wife of Charles, is Jane Van. She links me in to someone elses tree on here so I'll let them know what her husband was up to - thanks! I am going to have to get access to these records. It doesn't give me much for pre 1841 but you are already throwing so much light/depth on this line of my family, I will want to explore the other branches!. It's not just about getting back as far as you can for me. I want to know the history too. :) Thanks again - need anything in West Yorks? Vicky
