Joan of Arc(hives) Report 7 Oct 2005 23:45

Hi everyone! I want to verify one of my peeps in my tree. I can't check her birth on 1837 (born in 1832) I found her (I think) on LDS site but I want to check via Parish Records. Where would these be held for Battersea St Mary? Also, I can find her brother's birth (Bermondsey 1841) but can't read the image on freebmd. If I rang the Registry Office would they check it was the right ref no? Also would it be daft to send for his birth cert as that would give her parents details on it too? (As he was her brother?) Hope that makes sense!! Thanks Joan.

hi Joan if you're sure it IS her brother, his b. cert. will give you more (and possibly more accurate) info, than Parish records might provide. Presumably you have checked early census records for longitudinal verification, assuming any of them, parents & offspring, survived long enough to be counted in the e.g 1841/51/61 censuses as a recognisable family unit? regards

Hi Jude I found the brother living with the older (married) sister on the 1871 census, with the niece. The niece was in fact the daughter of the lady I want to verify the birth of (the younger sister). Would you say that is proof enough? Thanks, Joan

That's very kind of you Kathleen but the same fuzzy image is free on freebmd!! Try William HUCKS 1841, June I think it was. Bermondsey. The same image is on 1837, as I have access to that. Another pair of eyes would help. I can't read the no. I have to go to bed now, will catch any replies tomorrow. thanks. Joan

Hi Joan If recorded, baptism would be at London Metropolitan Archives. You will certainly need it as proof that the mother is the same person. (I once did as you intend, got a 1841 birh certificate, and barked up the wrong tree for years) I'm off to the FRC today, so can check the original index if you like for William's birth.

For absolute proof I would be guided by the advice you've received above, however, a longitudinal view from a sequence of census returns would be reasonably up there on the proof stakes in the absence of certification. Not all births (particularly) were registered, especially in the first few decades of the 1837 system. I have seen a figure of 75% coverage quoted in the literature for periods up to the 1870s and figures only improving slowly after that.

Hi Abbess!!! I'm so sorry didn't have a chance to check this this morning!! I would have loved for you to check it for me!! Now i'm so disappointed, I will probably never find it!! If you go again in near future I would be very grateful if you could look for me, & thanks for the info as to where the records are kept. Kathleen, Yes I thought it was a 1 too!! Is it still worth me ringing the registry office to see if they can find the entry, then I could send for cert? Thanks folks. Joan
