A big thank you to you both! I'm not sure about the John with the brother Edward because I have yet to find out the names of my John's parents and/or siblings. However, by 1881 my John was living in London with his wife and children as per Patricia's post. They left Warwickshire sometime in between 1856 and 1860. The Weaving industry in Warwickshire had collapsed and as there was a big furniture industry in Shoreditch at that time I imagine the move was in seek of work. John became a Weaver when they moved to London. Emma and Mary Ann Lenton are indeed the daughter's of my John! With the maiden name of their Mother I'm one step closer to finding this elusive man who has been bugging me for weeks! I'm applying for their birth certificates immediately! I've had several false starts with the other John and Thomas Lenton's in Foleshill at that time, but now I know I'm on the right track and I'm thrilled. Thank you again! Best wishes Lyndsey |

I think Hannah should have been Emma! Just found her marriage to John Reardon. Could this be her birth from freebmd Emma Lenton Coventry March 1849 16 454 and this for Mary Ann Mary Ann Lenton Shoreditch June 1860 1c 108 You probably had those already. There are two Thomas Lentons Foleshill Dec 1846 but I presume they're not the right one? |

If you look at the familysearch site online, you will see that the IGI lists a possible baptism for John in the right place. However I can see from the 1881 census on that site that there were other John LENTONs in the same place, about the same time. Your John appears to be with a brother Edward in 1881, Is that right? If so, you need to find a baptism of both, with the same parents. You can try on familysearch but it would be best then to check these entries against actual parish registers. These would probably be in the nearest Record Office but many have been filmed and can be seen at some main libraries too or ordered through your nearest Latter Day Saints centre. For the latter you may a small fee and the film is kept there for you to view for a certain time, - a few weeks, I think. |

Thanks for your suggestions. As Mary and John had 8 children hopefully at least one of the other 7 will have had their births registered! If I wanted to look for John'd baptism records would I have to go up to the Parish he was baptised in or are the records stored elsewhere now? |

If you get a birth cert for one of the children you would be better placed to find the marriage of the parents, as you would then have Mary's maiden name. It might even be that her name is already on FreeBMD, just that you don't know it yet! Merry |

Lyndsey Girls could marry at age 12, boys at age 14. If your Mary was born 1827 she could have married in 1839. Granted, the birth of first child in 1847 suggests a marriage not too long before that, but I have gg grandparents who did not produce a child (that I can find) until 1858, some 13 years after their marriage. Do you think John might have been away in the army or something of the sort? If you are relying on the age on the death certificate for Thomas's birth date, the ages quoted are only as good as the knowledge of the person registering the death. This can be several years out quite easily. I would suggest it might be worth extending your search for the marriage a bit further back than you have gone so far, and for at least 5 years either side of 1847 for Thomas's birth. Tina |

Thanks Sue I'm trying to find the parents and/or siblings of my Gt Gt Grandfather (John Lenton) who was born in Sowe-Warwick (now Walsgrave on Sower) in 1816. Fast forward to 1851 - John was married to Mary (b. 1827 in Endersby,Leicestershire) with five children and living in Alderman's Green, Coventry. He is not on the 1841 census. Given Mary's age she could not have married before 1845 when she was 18. Their eldest child Thomas was born in 'Foleshill' in 1847. I have searched between the years of 1845-7 for John and Mary's marriage and 1847 for Thomas' birth and found neither. Thomas died a Batchelor in 1898 aged 51 years. I'm trying to think of other ways of getting more info about John and Mary hence my question about death certificates. Any ideas? Cheers Lyndsey |

My Great Great Grandfather died in 1899 and when I received his death certificate, all it told me was date of death, cause, his full name, age (which is only as good as the person registering the death and was out by 6 years in this case), who registered it - which was all it stated was the name and relationship to deceased. In relation to addresses all I had was the place, and not street addresses, but then again that could be that it was only a small village and even the census doesnt have addresses on them until 1901. Hope this helps Regards Sue |

I know, these days, a death certificate has the name & address of the person registering the death but what information could you expect to find on a death certificate issued in 1898? Many thanks Lyndsey |
