My dad was a docker - he is 91 next month, bless him and still full of cockney wit! I remember seeing his dockers hook tied to a bit of twine round his waist when we met him from work and went to a pie and mash shop for a treat. He also had twine round the bottom of his trousers to prevent rats running up the inside of them and a leather jerking so they didnt jump on his back and scratch him. Bless them, they did work hard in those days. His dad was also a docker and used to stand waiting for a call out - Dad said Grandad was such a softy after a days work he would arrive home with only a bit of his money having handed out to blokes who couldnt get work on the way home - Nan used to rollick him! He also did prize fighting to get money to feed 8 kids!

Anybody know when boundries changed? One lot lived in Woolwich turn of the century up to 1930's-marriage in West Ham,parents had lived in lambeth. Previous generations lived in kensington 1850-1890.They had ventured to hampton 1850's.

I reckon most of them would be covered except Kensington. Woolwich is south of the river as is Lambeth, and west ham Essex so not bon fide, but very close - with docks. The rest, including St George thingy def should be covered!

Hi Port Cities is a beautiful site with old photos and lots of info about every city with erm a port! So it covers London docks but also other ports like Liverpool etc. Lovely site. Dockland ancestors is another good one for people with ancestors who worked in London Docks. There is also an east london ancestors family history site - cant remember actual name, just google it. Alter, East End covers such a big area Im afraid, mostly under Middlesex , places like Stepney, Bethnal Green, Whitechapel, St Pancras and on and on -and in practice incorporates areas south of the river - South East London and Essex. Gives us the districts and we can tell you if they count!
