Thanks Alter Ego, I certainly came to the right place for an answer to my query didn't I. Your all so knowledgeable (don't know how to spell it) but I'm sure you know what I mean. It'll be like starting all over again. I will do as you say and type in that site and thanks for that good advice to ring first. Roll on weekend when I will have more time to devote to this addictive hobby! Barbara |

parish records carry on right into the 20th century-the only problems youll have is sussing out denominations. County Records Archives are the most detailed and intersting reference source, but very different to intrnet stuff-its worth taking time to understand how the indexes all work, and consulting any resident archivist on duty so that you can maximize the usage .I'd advise you phone up first to arrange a visit as you will probably have to register. If you take a look at the FAMILIA site (type in ,and click the link),youll see that you can pick outa county ,and it'll tell you the different libraries and archives sections they have, with phone no's etc. |

I make constant use of my local LDS Family history centre - locate your nearest via the Mormon site familysearchorg. £3.80 for an entire film for 3 months use at the centre covering often all years back to 1600s.for most parishes. Jan |

It's worth checking the local family history society for the parish you are interested in as sometimes they have transcribed records available on CD. I purchased one for a parish in Berkshire for about £7 and it gave me so much valuable information on a branch of my tree, well worth the money and much cheaper than the pertrol it would have cost to go the the records office! Yes, and the marriage entries will be the same as you get on a marriage cert, whereas before 1837 you get just bride, groom and witness names. Some parish records extracts are on familysearch - you can find out which parishes/dates are covered by googling 'Hugh Wallis batch numbers'. There are also other snippets of parish registers online, for example for Norfolk - google 'Norfolk Transcription Service'. And you may find some on Family History Online, which is a pay per view service. nell |

Barbara I am not an expert, but the local Records Office holds a lot of Parish Records, well at least mine does. Christenings, marriages, burials and notification of Banns with fees that were paid. Christenings will include parents names and marriages will include witnesses names. The records office tends to hold the registers that have been completed, so you might find they hold later information than 1837, (this is the date you can look for birth, marriage and death certs from). It varies from church to church. JoJo |

You need to visit the record Office in the relevant area where you can search the records and expect to find baptisms, marriages and burials pre 1837. sometimes some of them may be available at main libraries if they have family History departments or Local studies departments. Ann Glos |
