A birth has to be registered within 42 days of the birth. A death is usually registered within a few days of the death, generally only later if there was an inquest or similar. A marriage will appear in the quarter it took place. All the above refers to civil registration which began 1st Jul 1837. Birth and death registration wasn't compulsory until 1875. Family Search: Some parish records are available via this Latter Day Saints site. Only some Church of England Bishops allowed their church records to be handed over to the Mormons, so coverage varies a lot for area. This web site will give you at least some pointers for coverage: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb(.)com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm#Page (remove the brackets from the address) Yes, you are right, the heading on Ancestry (1837-1983) sugestes the records are complete and that's not true!!! They get their records from the Free site: http://freebmd.rootsweb(.)com/cgi/search.pl (remove brackets) If you use FreeBMD instead you can view their coverage charts to show you what is done. Go to Main Page, Information, Coverage Charts. You will need to use a pay-per-view site like 1837online for post 1910 records (civil records, I mean) Merry |

Hi Gillian, What your refering to on births is that,,,,if born on the 31-12-60,your birth registration wont be found till the next year's quater,,,,,and you have 42days in which to register a birth,,,, So you may need to look in the next year or quater depending when the birth took place......... Gillian, Births are registered in quarters, not in months. So births that occur in January, February or March are registered in the first quarter of the year which is known as March quarter. The only exceptin is if the birth is near the end of a quarter and then it might be registered in the next quarter which is June quarter. Then there is September quarter and December quarter. Hope this makes sense to you. I think it is only births after about 1984 that are registered in months rather than quarters. Kath. x |

Hi Gillian, Regarding the birth registration, I think you've got the wrong end of the stick. When a baby is born, you have 6 weeks to register the birth. Say you were born in the middle of March, then your birth could have been registered in March or April. If March, you are listed in the March quarter, but if April you'd be in the June quarter as the listings are in 3 month groups. Hope that helps. Janice PS to Allie: on the top right of the familysearch page there is an option button to go to the old style page. |

THANKS EVERYONE - SO WHY DOES IT SAY ON ANCESTRY SEARCH 1837-1983? SEEMS DAFT TO ME - ALSO I HAVE LEARNT TODAY THAT IF THE BIRTH IS NOT REGISTERED IN THE MONTH OF BIRTH - IT COULD BE ANYWHERE - APPARENTLY IT IS ENTERED IN THE MONTH OF REGISTRATION. SO THAT REALLY CONFUSES THE SITUATION - I WILL PERSEVERE - THANKS FOR HELP. GILLIAN. |

I don't know what is going on with the familysearch, but I've just been on it again, and info which I have ACTUALLY PRINTED UP BEFORE from there seems to have disappeared ie when i put a name in which I have found before, it comes up 'NO MATCHES'..... They seem to have revamped their entry page so perhaps that has messed it all up! regards A |

I get that feeling often! I've put in definite dates on the familysearch site (which I know are true as I have the certificates) just to test the site and they always come up with NO MATCHES! And they were for 19th c dates. I contacted the site to find out how complete the listings are and got a real gobbledy gook answer, so just gave up. It's all so time consuming and frustrating!! regards A |

Hi Gillian, FamilySearch entries are in the main from parish registers - unless entered by individuals. They don't go up to present day. Problem for your christening/marriage entries if applicable is that you are too young! So you do exist and you aren't stupid!! Janice |
