Sorry, I was eating a take away! lol Translation: He should have been reg in Kingston as that includes Hampton (in Middlesex - are we sure it's that Hampton??). The GRO have the records (but in this case we can't find it, so it may not have reached them....), but so does the local office, though the GRO Vol and Page number are no use to them. The tricky bit is this: ''Kingston registers are now divided between Kingston upon Thames, Merton, Richmond upon Thames and North Surrey districts'' So you would have to phone round each office asking if they are the ones who hold the Kingston Birth registers for 1886? In my experience this is the first stumbling block as all the offices will say they do not!!! Here are the numbers: Kingston upon Thames 35 Coombe Road, Kingston upon Thames, KT2 7BA. Tel: 0208 546 0920 or 7993. Merton Morden Park House, Morden Park, London Road, Morden, SM4 5QU. Tel: 020 8648 0414. Fax: 020 8648 0433. Richmond upon Thames 1 Spring Terrace, Richmond, Surrey, TW9 1LW. Tel: 0208 940 2853. North Surrey Rylston, 81 Oatlands Drive, Weybridge, KT13 9LN. Tel: 01932 254360. If you can get one office to admit they hold the registers for the right time frame and district (Kingston) then you need to persuade tham to do the lookup and of course, you don't know which quarter it will be in!!! This is why many RO's don't do family history lookups!! If they are kind and do look and find it for you, then the cost is still £7 I believe. I think you would have to be fairly desperate to go down this route, but it may be possible. Good Luck Merry

Merry

Merry Report 21 Sep 2005 19:36

Maybe the entry didn't make it to to the GRO? You could try finding out if Kingston district willl do family history certs?? Merry

they seem a normal lot- hes 5 years old in 1891,marked as son...no reason to suggest anything else -they married june 1885.

Its bizarre, everyone else so far has played ball, and done what it said on the tin,but not this little fella. Even if a samuel pops up at the right time, theres no proof its him without buying the cert. Poo :-(

hi i had a g g uncle and I was tracing the family back through the census' and discovered that he was born before his parents marriage. On the 1891 census he was listed as William Edwards and then in 1901 William Smith. I then discovered that he was born 3 months before their marriage. Could this be the answer ( or maybe a different father altogether) Claire

Perhaps they used his middle name at the registration?

Merry Report 21 Sep 2005 18:57

I looked on Family Relatives from 1884 to 1889, as their indexes are supposed to be complete! Two Alfreds in 1889, but that's it! If he was born in Hampton and this is presumed to be the one in Middlesex, then he should have been registered in Kingston District. (That's Kingston Middlesex, not Jamaica lol) Merry

I have Alfred S. Derry born abt 1886,appears in 1891 census with parents Fanny and George, and again in 1901,same story........nice and simple,in London,.....laverly jabbly.........except one thing........cant find his birth.Have no idea what the middle name is,probably Samuel or Stephen.Ive looked in Ancestry, and freebmd is blank, though Im sure a couple came up last night ????.........Perhaps I'm having a senior moment or two.
