Ooh well done Tracy!! I found one Sarah born in Greatham at the right date (on the 1871 census). Her surname was Blanchard. Needs more investigating! Merry

Michelle, I found Adas birth I think... Birth Jun 1889 Chowney Ada Sarah Guildford 2a 86 Sarah's POB could be Greatham? - pronounced Gritham. If you Google Gritham Hampshire, it comes up with a few sites of explanation.

I suppose if Henry and Sarah never married, for whatever reason (maybe she was already married), the birth registrations of the children may be recorded in her previous name or her maiden name. We need to work out where this place ''Gritham'' in Hampshire is? Are you guessing from the census record? It looks different between 1891 and 1901..........I can't find a Sarah on 1881, 1871 or 1861 born anywhere that sounds like it, or looks like it.....Gggggrrrr! Merry

Henry and Martha are in Woking with their family in 1861. They have a son William who is 5. Do you think he changed his name? ..... clutching straws here!

Thank you Heather, I cannot find any records of the childrens births either. The only way I found out about Henry was to get Marys wedding cert (which had her fathers name on) Mary is my great grandmother. Gloria, thank you, I have already looked at the same family you have suggested, bit of a gamble though and I dont want to be barking up the wrong tree (but any tree would be nice at the moment lol!!)

Found a marriage on IGI between Henry Chowney and Martha Alderton, 23 June 1855 Horsell, Surrey. Wonder if these are his parents? Gloria x

You could get one of the kids birth certs to find out Sarahs maiden name. As the marriage is likely to be after 1866 (!) you can use familyrelatives.org to look up the marriage and the births as you can use a name search facility on there.

I have tracked down my Henry Chowney on the 1901 census (born 1855 ish, Guildford, Surrey) married to Sarah (b1857,Gritham, Hants) and with the children Ada,Alfred,Charles, Ellen, Henry and Mary. I was elated with this info until I couldnt find any record of his birth or marriage. Please could someone see if I am missing something, I just cannot find anything. Thank you all. Michelle
