How about a thread where if you come across a variation/alternative for an ancestor's first/middle name(s) then you can list it here? Don't know if this has been done before or if a website exists that covers this more eloquently but some examples of what I'm meaning are: JANE = JEAN ELLEN = HELEN KATE = CATHERINE/KATHERINE SALLY = SARAH These are some I've come across from doing Scottish research.

Here's a few more that are quite common in Scotland. Donald...Donny...Donnie...Domnull...Don Agnes....Senga...Nessie Janet....Jessie John ....Ian Samuel....Sorley Nial....Neil and any female name ending in INA is often known as INA eg Jamesina Also can I mention a surname that took me ages to find details for..... Bethune.............often anglised to Beaton Christine
