Thanks everyone George -I did find my Grandad on the 1901 census in the CENTRAL LONDON SICK ASYLUM BOARD hospital, Edgware Road, HENDON (funnily enough). I don't think that the one you found is right because he was born in the STRAND - where is NK? Thanks anyway! Esta - I had a look at the hidden lives site but neither of his 'homes' were there. Interesting site though! Did have some luck eventually on the ARCHON site (is it just me or is it a bit confusing?) but only refs to the catalogue in London Archives, so nothing doing until I can get up there. Any more thoughts on his Ma and Pa though? kind regards to all A

Bear Yard, Strand Children's Homes - EDMONTON SCHOOL and ASHFORD RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL Think this is all I have which will be of help! A ps tried the ARCHON site but am not very good at it - am I missing something?

Alison, I don't know what childrens home your grandfather was in but have you tried the hidden lives web-site. If the home is on there you should be able to ask for records ( if they still exsist ) I know it's a long shot but thought I'd mention it. Esta www.hiddenlives.org.uk

Helen- Thanks. I had looked on the deaths on Freebmd but no luck there, although I don't know if they have done the years in question yet. It HAD crossed my mind that I was dissing them, but my Grandad WAS ill-treated when a baby - he had a disabled arm because it had been broken and not treated amongst other 'impairments' he wasn't born with. As I said, I cannot get to the FRC easily, and the registers are not on line, IF they exist - I know that many did not survive following reorganisation etc., but who knows? regards A

Have you checked they didn't die? I don't think there were any child cruelty people to check up on them - but someone may have wanted them to pay maintenance for their child. Have you looked for an admissions/dismissals register for the children's home? It might explain why your grandfather was put there. nell

My Gt Grandparents went missing after my Grandad was born in 1898 - he was brought up in children's homes. I've tried to find them on the 1901 census, but perhaps they changed their names so the child cruelty people couldn't catch up with them! I don't know why I am persuing these two, but I would love to know if they had more children after my Grandad. They were both very young so there is a chance that they did. So far am trying the emigration angle but no luck so far here. Any more ideas? Thanks A ps Cannot get up to London to find out if there are any records in FRC for the children's homes which might help.
