You could try buying some credits on Family Relatives and look for births from the end of 1911 onwards with one of the grooms' surnames and with one of the brides' surnames as 'mother's maiden name' to sort them out. It sometimes works for me! It would also be worth searching for deaths on FreeBMD using the bride's first name(s) and the groom's surname just in case she died not long after the marriage (FreeBMD deaths only go up to about 1910), or indeed, do the same search on Family Relatives where they go up to 1920. Also, look for all the names on the 1901 census because it is possible that one of the couples was living together before they got married! Kate.

Really having to cut back on certificates, only ordering essentials. Husband has been asking how much it costs to order them and so far have managed to change subject rather than answering him. Have kept the bulging file in a box away from prying eyes!!! Thanks Sal :)

If you are sure that is your bride, then you can just order the marriage cert using her name alone. You don't need to enter the groom. I reckon it's Kate Kemp who has been mis-indexed or mistranscribed, not yours, as Kate's is the only entry on FreeBMD that is in pale type (the bold ones have been transcribed by more than one person. I put her name in again and she has been transcribed as page 861 as well as 801. The 861 is in bold. So your Dora is page 801. By the way - it's Q3 not Q1 1902!!! Merry

Sally you have put 1901 in your first message but 1902 in a later response. I was about to give the same advice as Elly but are you saying your original message was wrong?

Yep, you have a bride who shouldn't be there!! It may not be a mistranscription - there are mistakes in the indexes!!! If you post the details someone may be able to work it out, but may not be so easy if it's after the 1901 census.....(Hope it's Q1 lol) Merry

Yes, ancestry does get its BMD data from FreeBMD. And not all the indexes have been transcribed by FreeBMD yet. If the marriage is an early one then there will be 4 marriages on the page, i.e. 4 women and 4 men should be listed altogether, and some must not have been transcribed yet. If later, only 2 marriages per page so you have one extra listed, which must be a mistranscription. As you say it is 1902 then one of the brides is 'extra'. If you check each one of the images on FreeBMD by clicking on the spectacles next to the entry you can find out which one has the wrong page or volume number. Kate.

Yes, Ancestry do use freeBMD info. If there are an odd number of people on the page it is usually because it hasn't been fully transcribed yet. What area are you loking at? Some counties have their own BMD sites that include info Ancestry and FreeBMD don't have. Sam x

Sally The marriage index's do seem to be very incomplete What I do if it's not obvious, is look for them on the next census. If I have a Sarah - potential marriages to William Brown, Arthur Smith (bad examples!!) I look for Sarah Brown & Sarah Smith on the cesnus You should be able to confirm them by the place of birth Happy hunting Elly

Can someone explain to me how the marriage index system works. Have found a marriage in 1902, and Ancestry gives me 3 women and 2 men on the page. Try BMD and I get exactly the same. Do Ancestry use FreeBMD info? How on earth can I confirm right one without cert and 1 groom short anyway!! Sally
