I found my grandads and downloaded it. It's the same type of thing that I already have (his original papers) but will be nice to put in my file.

Hi Sandra, where can I find the seamans records on online in National Archives website? I could not find it. I hope to find two of my ancestors who were in Royal Navy. Thanks, Steven.

Hi, How does one go about getting the seamens records? Is it only for navy or is it for any seamen, mariner? Thanks Victoria

Site address is http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/default.asp These records are just (Just? - now over 400k listed!) for seamen in the navy. They don't include everyone who served after 1853, as the system seems to have applied just to men who joined after that date and not all cooks etc are on the early records. But, men could swap between Royal and Merchant Navy, so it is worth checking. If you navigate around the site to the Catalogue, you can do searches on actual names eg Daniel Marsh (one of my ancestors!) and find men who were awarded naval pensions in ADM 29. If you search under surname and initials eg SMITH J and Department or Series code BT you can find men in the Merchant Navy in the mid 1900s, mainly in BT 372. Have fun!
