Kate, Helen, Lizloojay, Thank you all for your very quick replies. I am just keeping my fingers crossed that they decided to stay in the village, because this is the only marriage I could find for the date I am searching for and very seldom forename of the groom, and all my family line came from this small village. Very many thanks to you lovely ladies once again, very much appreciated, and I have learnt another abbreviation connected to Genealogy. Elizabeth

I think it might be short for sojourner which means temporary resident. Liz x

I would guess its an abbreviation of sojourner, a term meaning a temporary resident. nell

Could it be 'sojourner', i.e. they were travellers just staying in the parish for a short while? Kate.
