I cut and pasted something onto Rootschat and it was deleted by the moderator and I was left a little note for being 'naughty' I honestly didn't know you couldn't do that and have apologised..... whoops...... I certainly know now Linda |

Hi June, I've had a good look now and it seems o.k. if you want to type it all out yourself but not a direct cut and paste. Linda |

Maybe they wouldn't notice if you cut and paste, but before you posted it, you alter it a bit, rather than typing out the whole thing?? As Ancestry records the household in alphabetical order in the index, if you moved the people around into the order they are on the census sheet they might think you had typed it up??! Not that I would ever do such a thing, you understand?? lol Merry |

When I did that I thought that the moderator was deleting my messages. When I checked he had edited them to take out references to where I had got them from. If it didn't make sense after the edit I sent a private message to the person I was helping explaining what I had really meant to say. For example 'the only marriages on Familyhistory Online in Dorset' was changed to 'the only marriages in Dorset', two entirely different statements. |

I had a similar wrist-slapping last week - copied and pasted an 1881 entry from LDS. It was slightly edited and allowed to stand. |

Cutting & pasting from a website without acknowledging the owner of the copyright breaches copyright laws. This is cut and paste(!) from the Rootschat copyright guidance notes (© 2003-2005, RootsChat(.)com): Copyright Copyright is a legal mechanism that protects the originators of material from their work being copied by somebody else. You may not post copyrighted material on RootsChat without the written consent of the copyright owner, the detail of which must be included in your posting. If you are in doubt if something is copyright, then assume it is. For guidance on Copyright and Intellectual Property please visit http://www.intellectual-property.gov.uk You are responsible for the messages that you post to ensure that they do not breach copyright. If you infringe copyright, your post will be deleted by our moderators, and could be locked out from using RootsChat. Crown Copyright British Census images and data are Crown Copyright. A low resolution portion of a census record may be posted on RootsChat, provided that it is only used for private study or research purposes of a non-commercial nature. RootsChat limits file attachments to 300kb in order to limit resolution and sizes of images posted for this reason. We would expect such images to be used for handwriting recognition, therefore we disable the ability to attached images in all the 'lookup' sections. Where you have posted information that is Crown Copyright, you must ensure that the information is accurate, in context and add the statement that 'This information Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk' For fuller guidance, please view the Copyright statement from The National Archives: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/legal/copyright.htm Transcriptions and Lookups can be provided freely on RootsChat, as long as Crown Copyright is acknowledged, and that you have transcribed the information accurately. Please note that somebody else's transcription is their own work, which you cannot copy unless they have given their permission. If a moderator spots any tell-tale wording like 'Click for more information' or 'Page 1 of 2' then naturally we can only assume that the transcription is not your own work, and such posts should be reported so that they can be deleted. You MUST however ensure that by posting transcriptions that you personally do not break any licence agreements, or terms of use set by others. |

I got into trouble on there for asking for a look up with an S&N reference. I think they have been in trouble with places themselves in the past which is why they are very aware now. |
