The image shows the household at 42 St James St, Hull. I suspect the beginning of the household may be on the previous page as the first entry is for the wife. The occupation for this wife may be a clue to the answer I am looking for......but I can't read it! It goes something like ? ? of Parish whip/whif The entry I am looking at is my 3x great grandmother whose occupation is given as Needlewoman (Parish Whip/Whif/Whaf) There is also another lady in the household whose occupation is given as Charwoman (Parish Whip/Whif/Whaf) So basically I would like to know is it Whip, Whif or Whaf and what did a Parish Whip/Whif/Whaf do? Thanks ever so Jeanette x

My guess is that they are receiving some sort of parish welfare. Have emailed you.

IT'S PARISH RELIEF (Sorry, tipping 1 fingered!) That's better, put my supper down now. I can see why you thought it said whip.

That's brilliant Brenda. Thankyou Can I pick your brains further? As Parish Relief has actually been written on the census, would the address she was living at have been a designated place for those receiving relief to live, or would they have had to declare that they were in receipt of relief?

Although the poor were supposed to be housed in the new workhouses, I think it must have proved easier and cheaper to provide outdoor relief for some people. So far as I can tell, such people remained in their own homes, but were also given financial help and help in kind.

Thanks Brenda. You're a gem! I knew they had been poor, but I hadn't realised how poor :-( Jeanette x
