I am working up from my uncle to find his link to a certain person, now I want to start at the certain person and build down to my uncle - in the middle are possibly 3 generations missing which I hope to brdige in the future. I do not see how I can start at the top when I am only permitted to add partner, parent or child to an existing person. Jules |

can you not fill in the details with a fictitious id? for each member of each generation..........and correct/rename them later? or is that not possible under Genes? Bob |

Just add parents, grandparents etc and call them say ''Uncles Dad'', ''Uncles Grandad'' until you've bridged the gap. Then if you subsequently find their names, you can edit them later. You will need to get the right number of generations in the gap though, otherwise you'll find it impossible to enter or remove intervening generations once you've completed the chain, at least on this site. But if I understand you correctly - the certain person who you believe to be an ancestor of your uncle is already on your tree? In which case, the only way to link to your uncle (who is presumably already linked to your tree elsewhere) is to enter his ancestor twice (the GR tree doesn't allow for more than one link to the tree for each individual). |

Thank you both - No, the person I want to make the link to is not already in my tree. My uncle has been lead to believe that he is directly related to BLUR, I now know that is not the case because BLUR did not have children - I suspect that BLURS parents had brothers and sisters and it is through these lines that the connection exists. I have got quite a lot info which I want to get on line and then build the bridges in between. I think I am going to need some other software. that allows more flexability. |

Jules - try PAF which you can download from the familysearch.org (LDS) website. This is an excellent program - and what's more, it's FREE! Richard |

I stored all my info on GR in the beginning and then, when I realised I had made a mistake and wanted to correct it, I found I couldn't make corrections without deleting half my work and starting again. I bought Family Tree and downloaded all the information to the programme on my desk top. I made the necessary changes by dragging and clicking - really simple- and then loaded it back up again. |
