hi all ,can some one please help me.i have a copy of my grandmothers death certificate and it has wife of ??? now i know my granddad left my grandmother when my dad was only a kid possibly around the late 1920s,as my dad was born in 1923.and i know who he went off with and he had children with this person.so my big question is would it still have wife of on the death certificate even if they got a divorce,or is that what they do if they were still legally married.any help gratly appreciated regards lesley |

The information on a death certificate is given by the informant of the death. I don't think anyone checks it. So they could still have been legally married, or the informant could have thought they were legally married (or wanted the registrar/world in general to believe they were). The only way to know for sure is to look for a divorce - there's info about this on the National Archives site, choose family history and then click on divorce to find it. Did your granddad marry the other woman? His marriage cert to her would state if he was divorced. nell |

hi nell, thanks for your reply,i checked the archives, did what it said ,put in surname as keyword and j77 as reference and got no results.so dose that mean if they have no record that there was no divorce. |
