I recieved a marrage certificate and it says in the Fathers part thomas Crone (16) (deceased) I have had marriage Certs before where they have said deceased, but not had a number by the side of it. What does this mean?

If there's a number, its usually because an error has been corrected. Is there a comment in the margin? nell

Oh yeah!! It says sixteen J.L. The registrar was called John Lister. He has originally written Morgan and crossed it out and written Crone. Thankyou very much. you are very clever

Jody, When a mistake is made in the register and it is altered it has to be recorded down in the margin and you put a number against it. So your 16 means that it is the 16th mistake that was made it that register. In October I will be filling in the returns for marriages in our church for this last quarter and because our vicar made a mistake I will have to put a (3) on the return as it is the 3rd mistake made in that particular register. I have to do it all in permanant ink, and me and ink don't mix. This will be the first time I have done a return. Josie
