Can anyone give me some advice on this? Gt Gt grandma was in service at 'the big house' and came home in disgrace, pregnant, in 1874. Story in the family is that it was the son of the house what done it and that the family made a settlement with gt gt grandma's father. Certainly he collected together evidence and family certificates after the child was born in 1875 and made a will leaving her all his worldly goods, but of course no explanation. Birth certificate and baptism certificate are silent as to father, no give away middle names therefore no evidence. This aristocratic family are still around today. More importantly, if we could prove this it would mean that my husband is a direct descendant of William the Conqueror... I have checked the A2A site for family papers in record offices and drawn a blank. Does anyone have any other ideas? Sheila |

Lure one of the aristos to your house, do a quick mouth swab and check the DNA? (On the assumption that the women were better behaved than the men!) |

I like that one Brenda ! A very kind lady at Chichester FRO pointed me towards the Warrant section of the Quarter Azzizes and I found the father's name of my GG Grandfather! He was made to pay the sum of 2/- per week. Maybe your ancestor sorted it out on the quiet! Good luck Angela |

Would there be a Bastardy Bond in the Record Office? Do you have a copy of the Will? It might contain even a vague reference to a relationship. Or perhaps the family kept papers - legal or even just correspondence between relatives. Whether they have been deposited or kept in the private family collection is another matter. |

Sheila Sorry to be frivolous here, but we are nearly ALL related to William the Conqueror. As the relationship must have been about 30 generations ago, I am afraid his genes have been somewhat diluted by those other millions of people who were your 30 x grandparents! As far as I know, this sort of thing could be hushed up with money. There is the very outside chance that some Solicitor will have, or will, deposit the instructions he received to act in this matter, with the County Records Office. Good luck! Olde Crone |
