Hi, my gg grandad was born c1872 and was a ships fireman. In 1891 he is listed with his parents although it does say (at sea), so im presuming he was at sea at the time. I am unable to find him in 1901, but i believe i may have found his wife on her own with some children. If he was at sea at that time, was a census done anywhere that would list him?

Well, Ive not found any of mine in a census when they were at sea. I think it depends on where they were and how diligent the captain was. I have found for other people fishermen on census with a listing of where they were - off what coast etc. If he is on a census it should come up with entering his name age and place of birth.

I think he would only be listed on a census return if his ship was in port on census night, and not if he was at sea. If you give his name and age maybe someone else will look for him. Kath. x

Hi sorry, he married Sarah Danslow in 1895. I believe they had a child earlier than that, as i have her living in Bootle Cum Linacre where James lived all his life with several children. john, Mary Ann,Hugh and Charles. She is just listed as Wife, but no husband is there.

MMmmm She says she is a wife, but with 'head' crossed out which does suggest to me that he was away at sea, rather than just out at work at the time.

My great gran was always shown as 'head' when her husband was at sea.
