I am trying to trace my great grandfather John Anderson b1860. The problem is that on various census forms and marriage certificate it says he was born in Yorkshire, but not which area. He married in Southwark 186O, his father was also John but had died by this time. I have looked at different census and can only find one John that seems to fit. Is there any other way I can find the actual area he was born in? Iwould be very greatful for any help Thanks Jean

Sorry about that - obviously had a senior moment! He was married in 1886 to Ethel Barrett. She came from Ashwellthorpe in Norfolk. The only family I can find who may be connected lived in Market Weighton E Yorkshire, but this is rather a long shot Thank you for your trouble Jean

Could this be it? The Head is also a John. You know he had died at time of John Jnr's marriage - any death certificate in your possession? 1871: Betsey Anderson abt 1858 Redby, Yorkshire, England Daughter Pocklington Yorkshire Caroline Anderson abt 1807 South Cave, Yorkshire, England Wife Pocklington Yorkshire John Anderson abt 1815 Market Weighton, Yorkshire, England Head Pocklington Yorkshire John Anderson abt 1860 Thinsley, Yorkshire, England Son Pocklington Yorkshire Mary Anderson abt 1855 Keplingham, Yorkshire, England Daughter Pocklington Yorkshire Sarah Ann Anderson abt 1862 Thinsley, Yorkshire, England Daughter Pocklington Yorkshire Walter Garakam abt 1857 Market Weighton, Yorkshire, England Servant Pocklington Yorkshire

Thanks Sally-Anne This is the same family that I have also found. A John Anderson from Pocklington died 1880 aged 65 which would tie in. Need to do a bit more searching but looking hopeful Thanks again Jean

Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 12 Sep 2005 12:47

Do you have the death certificate for John, who died aged 65? If so, who registered his death? As it was 1880, there is a good chance that the informant was one of the family and you will find them at the same address in 1881. Will you be able to tell from that census information, whether or not you have the right family?

Hi Gwynneyth I don't have death cert and I'm not sure it would help as I 'm still not sure that John jnr is the correct one, who by 1881 was working on a farm in an adjoining village. But it might be worth ordering a cert if I can get no further Thanks for you messgae Jean
