It might be of interest to you, Bob, that I've met some gilders...they applied the gold leaf to books and carved picture frames. (It was part of a restoration process in a national library). happy researching!

Bob, I should imagine that my Joseph Barber Brooks worked for someone else. His wife Harriet's maiden name was France - her father Robert was a frame maker, in Denmark Street. Joy

you know? you may be right, I may have jumped to a wrong conclusion.........on the '81 census, he is a 'guilder', on the daughter's marriage certificate,(1877) he is a 'guilder',but on the above birth cert(same daughter) he is a 'gilder', and yes I suppose it COULD be carver............I wonder,on the '81, he is Charles George White,in 59 mansell street,Aldgate, and the same address in 1877, a long shot, I wonder if he is still there in 1891? stand by....... Bob

Does it say 'Carman' on just one record?? Just wondered if it should say ''Carver and Gilder'', but person heard ''Carter and Guilder'' and wrote ''Carman and Gilder''?? Obviously this mistake would probably only happen the once! Merry

hi Vivienne I thought that maybe that ''trade'' would have been a bit of a skilled job, and a bit above that of a carter, but maybe times were 'Ard, as they say.... A birth cert for a daughter in 1857, says ''Carman and Gilder..journeyman'' Bob

I suspect that it is a person that works with gold leaf..... as opposed to a guilder( one who belongs to a guild)? another occupation of this man was the (whitevan man) of the time, a Carman....... thanks, for any replies. Bob
