Hi Am looking for my 3x g/grandparents – HENRY HERBERT TULL & ELIZA ROWLAND – they were married Bethnal Green March 1849, I have tried all the possibilities I can think of but can’t find them TULL family anywhere on censuses from 1861/71/81 or 91. I have tried all the usual sources and have searched Ancestry till I'm blue in the face! (Can't even find Eliza's Rowland's anywhere either) Their daughter RHODA REBECCA TULL was born February 1855 – they are shown at 15 Wenlock Terrace, Hoxton New Town on Rhoda's birth cert (27/2/1855), Henry is shown as a 'Mill Lawyer' on her birth cert and as a Cabinet Maker on her marriage cert. I have details of RHODA as a servant in Hackney St John on the 1871 aged 16, and have her on subsequent census with my 2x great grandfather and their own family. The problem is I can’t find Henry and Eliza on any census at all – can anyone help – I’ve tried everything I can think of with no luck. Any suggestions as to what else to try gratefully received. Thanks Trudy |

This could be Henry's death, just before the 1871 census: Deaths Mar 1871 Tull Henry Herbert 40 Shoreditch 1c 115 Are you sure that his occupation was Mill Lawyer? More likely Mill Sawyer I would think. |

Hi Trudy, have you tried name variations? You could try TUEL or TULE, possibly TOLL or TOLE. I usually try squinting at the name to see how many variations I can see with half an eye. Good Luck Vivienne |

Many thanks all. Richard - yes that could be his death, hadn't found that one before, but he is definitely a 'Mill Lawyer'. The others on IGI I have seen before but haven't been able to find a link with Rhoda as I have her birth but couldn't find the christening. Many thanks for all your help. |

I couldn't find the family on 1861 or 1871 censuses either but I think this is Rhoda's mother and siblings in 1881: RG11/264 folio 94 page 10 St Mary Islington 12 Rosemary Street Eliza Tull head widow 48 charring Shoreditch Agnes Tull dau u m 18 box maker Shoreditch Herbert Tull son 16 compositor Shoreditch Walter Tull son 15 compositor Shoreditch (I guess 13 year old Ada was probably in service somewhere) In 1891 Eliza is living at 9 Penn Street Shoreditch, with her daughter Ada I think, though the enumerator was rather confused and didn't name a head of the household: RG12/250 folio 60 page 17 Eliza Tull mother in law M 60 needlewoman Shoreditch Ernest Harris son in law M 22 portmanteau maker Hoxton Ada Harris wife M tie maker Hoxton She is still with Ada in 1901 RG13/276 folio 161 page 33 Shoreditch 3 Harvey Street Ernest Harris Head 31 portmanteau maker London Hoxton Ada Harris Wife 31 London Hoxton Edward Harris Son 5 London Haggerston Ernest Harris Son 8 London Haggerston Eliza Tull Mother-in-law 72 retired laundress London St Pancras Henry Jordan Boarder 24 London Hoxton Interesting that Eliza ages 24 years from 1881 to 1901 whilst her daughter , if born the year she was baptised, has only aged by 18 years! PS I really think a sawyer is more likely to become a cabinet maker than a lawyer - capital L and S looked very similar in some writing so, even if it is definitely an L on the copy you have I'd like to bet that the original entry read Sawyer |

Thanks Judith Amazing what another pair of eyes can see sometimes - I think you almost get 'snow blindness' sometimes and can't see them for looking. Regards Trudy |
