1841 for some counties is available on www.britishorigins d o t c o m but check if they have the county you want before subscribing (you can take out a 72-hour subscription or something like that, and they will not automatically renew it, if you just want to do a few lookups). Also www.stepping-stones (.) c o (.) uk (remove brackets and spaces) has some counties online but there is no name index available on there. You buy credits and each credit will give you access to a load of pages to look through! 1851 - there is a 2% sample of it available in various places, including ancestry, but also it is rumoured that it will all be available on ancestry soon! And don't forget to have a look on FreeCEN. Otherwise you could buy a CD-ROM for the county you are interested in, but it can work out pretty expensive if your ancestors came from lots of different counties! Other than that, I am afraid you have to visit record offices. Kate. |

Loads of people on here have the census CD's for various counties: Just give the name of who you are looking for and which county and I'm sure someone will find them for you. Sam x |

Local family history societes have transcribed large chunks of the 1851, and a lot of these transcriptions are available at www.familyhistoryonline.net . Check their coverage first to see if the area you're interested in has been done. It's pay per view but quite cheap, and credits last for 6 months. The LDS has an 1851 transcription for Devon, Norfolk & Warwickshire. Unlike their 1881, these are not available online but can be viewed at one of their family history centres or can be purchased on CD. A free online transcription for Gloucestershire and Southern Warwickshire 1851 is available at: www.rootsweb(.)com/~cotswold/GLSontheweb.htm A complete transcription for Cornwall 1841 is available free at freecen.rootsweb(.)com Richard |

If you have a look on the records board there are a few peeps offering lookups for the '41. Check with these threads to see what counties are listed. The counties available are limilted, but those that are have been fully transcribed. ;)) |
