Does anyone know what someone can do with transcripts of parish registers they've done themselves at a CRO? Can they be sold to the likes of S&N to be published and sold on CD? or because they're free for us to go and view can they not be sold? Any thoughts welcome. Em |

I dont know Em, I know our Family History Soc takes peoples proven transcripts. Not sure about anyone actually paying for them though. I know quite a few are put on peoples websites free to view. |

Thanks Heather, No I haven't got a clue either - I wouldn't have thought so for a minute but I looked at S&N for him where I get my folders from and they have a few for sale so wonder where they come from - so to speak - people sending them in or their own researchers. x |

You would need to check with the individual records office but as the copyright would belong to them or maybe even the parish I doubt they would allow you to transcribe for profit without permission. For example Somerset have the following ruling about transcribing registers that have been purchased on fiche so guess the situation would be similar if transcribing in the RO 'TRANSCRIPTS OF SOMERSET PARISH REGISTERS COPYRIGHT INFORMATION Anyone wishing to transcribe from fiche copies of parish records they have purchased and to publish them in machine-readable form free of charge may do so provided: The transcripts are circulated without profit to the transcriber and with a proviso that any subsequent copying is allowed only if free of profit. Anyone wishing to include a subsequent copy as part of a profit-making publication or distribution must apply to the Somerset Archive and Record Service for permission. A statement to this effect is included with the posting. A copy of the transcript is supplied (by Internet or disk) to the Somerset Archive and Record Service. The transcriber agrees to the transcript being made available to users at the Record Office and to its re-use in Archive Service databases and distribution over the Internet or by other means. The transcriber makes no claim for copyright against any such use by the Somerset Archive and Record Service. ' |

Oh that's a great help Judith - thank you. I will look into seeing if the same thing applies for the record office in question. The transcribing has been done all from Bishops Transcripts I believe for the whole of Richmond Yorkshire - a lot of transcribing just for fun!! Thanks |
