Have now got birth cert (1890)for son of my husband GGF and it shows dad as being a Sergeant in 1st Scots Guards. How would a welshman become a Scots Guard (Thomas Jenkins)? And where would the Scots Guards be barracked in London area please?

Thanks Alan, this is really a weird one. I mean he was in the Worcesters then I found him as a guard at Wellington Barracks. Does footguard cover all regiments? Im wondering if I got him confused with anothe Thomas Jenkins from the Welsh borders? But he has been a soldier all along and now I have the sons birth cert I see he was a sergeant in the Scots. Strange. Will come to light one day I guess.

My Great Grandfather (from Bolton in Lancashire) joined the 85th Regiment at Bury Barracks in 1854. Within a year he transferred to the 72nd Regiment which was a Highland Regiment. Apparently he used to say that he had been an Englishman in a Scottish Regiment in Ireland. It seemed to be quite common for regiments to make up numbers before going abroad by offering a bounty - the 72nd was going to the Crimean War. He spent the rest of his service in the 72nd. Not sure if you gave a date but during WWI and WWII someone called up could be sent to any regiment. My Welsh Grandfather was in Yorkshire when he volunteered during WWI, I have a letter from the recruiting sergeant in Halifax to the Welsh Regiment asking if they would accept the transfer of two Welshmen. Thanks guys - we are talking a guy born Welsh Boarders 1862 and by 1890 a Sergeant in the 1st Scots Guards. Oh well, at least this hobby will keep me going well into my dotage, eh?
