I have received the marriage cert for my grandads sister. She and her husband were both born and bred in Burton on Trent. On Christmas eve 1925 they married at the Register Office in Conway, North Wales. Their residences are the same address in Llandudno. My thoughts are that it was possibly a guest house. He was a labourer, she has no occupation. They are both age 24, so not under age. Why on earth did they marry in Conway? Any ideas???? I cannot find any family connections to Wales at all. I have looked at his family on the census back to 1861 and there is no connection with Wales and I know there isnt with her family. I'm really stuck on this one. Margaret

Did they elope? Are the witnesses family members or people you've never heard of?

3 possibilities: 1. They were living there - do you know that they went back to Burton after the marriage? 2. They combined a Christmas holiday/honeymoon and married at the same place, just as some people go abroad to get married nowadays. 3. They wanted to avoid the relatives for some reason - perhaps there was pressure to have a church wedding and they went away and did their own thing quietly. Register office marriages are sometimes because the person has no faith, or bride and groom come from different faiths, or because bride is pregnant. Another possibility is that either of them was divorced, so could not marry in church. nell

Witnesses: never heard of them. No children, she never had any. Ages are certain, they were both born in 1901. All of the family I have spoken to, cannot understand why they married in Wales. I think they must have eloped. Margaret

Have you tried to find the witnesses on the census? Might shed some light on the matter Linda
