Welsh place names arequite often mistranscribed - yesterday I came across someone born in Butlins Denbighshire in 1801! I would go on the GWYNEDD mailing list on ROOTSWEB and ask there, someone might recognise the name. Try looking through the gazetteer at http://homepage.ntlworld[.]com/geogdata/ngw/l.htm See if you can recognise anything that looks right Martin |

The start of the place name definately looks like Llanais on the census page. It is quite common for Welsh names to be written down wrong as the person entering the details will probably not speak Welsh especially in Lancashire. He seems to have been in Everton in 1871 married to Jane who was a year younger than him and born in Caernarfon. No place name is given for either of them. He was in West Derby in 1861 again wife Jane and several children. Place of birth is again just given as Caernarfonshire. He does not seem to be in England in 1891. Either died or returned to Wales (or mistranscribed). Martin |

The nearest sounding name I can find is 'Llanfair-is-gaer'. I know it looks nothing like the name but welsh people talk very fast and the enumerator could have mis heard. Just a thought! |

All the children in 1861 are born in Caernarfonshire. Samuel was 14 and a Printer or Painter so I searched the other censuses. He is the only Samuel of that age in 1861 There is a Samuel of the right age in Newborough (Anglesey) in 1871 with another Hughes born Newborough. He is a Ship's Carpenter born Bangor. That could fit with his father being a Joiner and living around Liverpool but does not prove it is the same person. In 1891 there is a Samuel living in Bangor born Bangor and he is a Printer and Compositor which would fit if 1861 read Printer. Again suggests the children were born Bangor or at least around there. There is only one Samuel of the right age in each year Martin |
