Can any body tell me where I have to go to get a copy of a birth certificate for someone born in Stowe-Warwick (now Walsgrave on Sower) in 1816. I have no other information about him Many thanks Lyndsey

You can't. Civil Registration didn't start until 1837 so before this time, there are no certificates. Have you checked to see if his baptism is on the IGI? Sam x

I would do as said above but also have a look at their catalogue/library and see what records they have on film for Stowe in Warwick or Walsgrave. If you can't get to the local records office yourself you could possibly go to your local LDS Family History Centre and order the film in for you to view on their viewers. Films cost £2.20 + 50p postage and take a couple of weeks to arrive (if not already out).

Many thanks to you both for your helpful replies. I have looked at the IGI site (my 1st time!) as suggested and found it very informative. I found a reference to what may be my Gt Gt Grandfather's Baptism. I have photocopied and made notes of all the data. However, and please excuse my ignorance, could you possibly tell me what sort of information will be on those records and if it is likely that I will be able to determine that I have the right person given I have no details of his parentage etc? Many thanks Lyndsey Lyndsey

To he honest there probably won't be any more information on the film/records than there is on the website. It's really more to check that the details have been transcribed correctly. Proving that you definately have the right one if you don't have details of his parents is a bit more tricky (even if you do know his parents!). I have the same problem myself now with a number of my rellies born pre1837 so I would be interested to see if anyone knows the answer! Sam x

The exact wording on an 1830 OPR for one of mine obtained through looking at the OPR at the LDS FHC. 'Barbara Hope born 25 March 1830 Barbara daughter of John & Margaret Hope, pitman of Crawford's Alley, Berwick' However there are a couple of other ones - hopefully not a rellie but shows what they contain - John Hope born 4 Apr 1841 - illegitimate son of Elspeth Hope. John Hope born 20 Oct 1822 - illegitimate son of William Hope and Elizabeth Lond? husbandman of outchester Hope that helps

Rose I somehow mamged to lose your post but luckily had copied it out first! Thanks for your posting. I too saw John and Jane Lenton listed and drew the same conclusions too! Mary (the Publican) could have been John's mother but I found Joseph and Ann Lenton listed too, both aged 60 and living in Brick Kiln Lane - so they could be contenders too! Alas how can I ever know for sure!!??

Thanks Yvonne Heather - The John and Mary Lenton entry on the 1851 census are 'my folks'. This is the John whose family I can not find on the 1841 census. I thought briefly that John and Jane on 1841 census might have been connected but obviously not! On the Family Group Records on the IGI site I found a John Lenton with parents named Joseph and Ann Lenton but John's d.o.b is 2 years out (which I realise means nothing) On the 1841 census records on Pickards Pink Pages there is an entry for Joseph and Ann Lenton living in Brick Kiln Lane. So .. could be either, could be neither! Meanwhile, thanks to all you folks who have ventured forth to help me. Lyndsey
