My history is awful and I am having a wee bit of trouble looking up relevent information . On the 1891 census he's fine! I think the most likely explanation is that he was injured in the second of the Boer Wars. This was the name given to the South African Wars of 1880-1 and 1899-1902, that were fought between the British and the descendants of the Dutch settlers (Boers) in Africa. Though I suppose he could have been injured in training in this country. The deafness suggests there were explosives involved.

claire, if you google wars for that time you will find our soldiers were at a lot of wars, The Boar War, India and Pakistan so you need to look on military sites for your info, good luck..MOE!

There are two T Neville's mentioned in the Wounded sections of the Boer War Gazette entries in The Times newspaper. Of course, maybe neither of them are him, but thought I would give you the details: 1) Paper date 15th May 1900 - 1st Cameron Highlanders (sounds unlikely lol) Severely Wounded - 3004 Pte T Neville 2) Paper date 2nd June 1900 - 5th Company Imperial Yeomanry Slightly Wounded - 286 Pte T Neville Merry

He is down as Paralised and Dumb, I dont know how paralised or the defintion of dumb but I am assuming, regardless of how bad his injuries were, that it would've been Difficult for Annie (my GG Granmother) with 2 kids under 3 and her husband away at sea (which was were he was most of the time!) and in them days!!
