This has probably been asked before but can anyone advise where I can view London Times archives online please.Interested in years 1860, 1863 1867 and 1941.I would like photocopies of original articles for my family tree album. Several websites I have contacted just re -direct me to the British Library etc. I have the exact pages and dates for two of the entries I need to find...a fire at my rellies premises that may have contributed to his bankruptcy, and a marriage announcment sometime in 1941.I have name of Brides mother. I'm out in rural Wales so trips to the B.L. etc are out. Any advice or help most welcome. Thankyou, Sheila. |

Google Bedfordshire Library, join online. They will send you a card number and pin number then you search the Times Archives free. Good Luck Irene |

You may not have to join Bedford library as your local library may have online access. I can access it via our county library website - just have to key in the number on my library ticket. |

If you don't find what you are looking for in the paper straight away, remember this: They used a computer Optical Character Reader to digitise every word in the paper. This means that when you view a page of the paper you are seeing the original print, but it will have been the results from the OCR that will have taken you to the page. The OCR is very good, but it doesn't always pick up every match from the paper, because it will have misread words from time to time. This seems to happen a lot when the typeset has gone a bit crooked - just like the census transcribers mis-reading poor handwriting!! So if you can't find something straight away, try thinking laterally for other words that might be in the article. For instance, if you knew Samuel Clarke murdered his mother, but there's no result for ''Samuel Clarke'' in the right time frame, try ''Clarke + murder'' or ''Samuel + knife'' or whatever!!! Best of luck - once you have access to The Times you will be hooked to your computer for ever! Merry |

Thankyou Merry, what a mind of info. :) Thanks for the useful tip. I did find two articles that I needed but one I couldn't so will try your suggestion. My main problem was printing out the page.I seem to need Adobe which is now installed...I hope!! Thankyou everyone. |
