I know this may be obvious to some but here is my tip of the day for the less experienced - when you can't find your rellies on websites anymore ( too far back, not listed etc) you have to get out of your chair and start travelling. I have found lots of helpful stuff at the British Library, Guildhall LIbrary, Family Records Centre and the London Metropolitan Archives. I am soon going to be off to the National Archives. Allthese places have very helpful staff and (even bettter) you can check in advance to make sure they have the sort of records you want by going onto their websites. A site called A2A searches lots of archives for you and tells you what is where. |

There is an intermediate stage... If you know that a particular library/office has the record you want, but that's the only one you want from there, they may be prepared to look it out for you and send you a copy. Because of administrative costs, they may have a (say) £5 minimum charge but, if it's the other end of the country, that may be a reasonable price to pay. Christine |
