Married Twice?

Can anyone tell me why two people would marry twice in the space of 10 days? The marriage is between Donald Stewart and Jessie McMillian in 1856 in Aberfeldy. The only difference that i can see is that one of the marriages is on the Free Church. They are in the same area, i know that sometimes people got married twice in each others churches. Anyone think that this is what is happening here?

Are you sure that one of the references you have found couldn't be the banns or licence or whatever they had in Scotland, and the other one the actual marriage? There often seem to be two entries for Scottish marriages and I think I read somewhere that was usually the explanation. Kate.

Kate Found the marriages on IGI so i'm not sure, when i get more scotlandspeople credits i'll get there marriage cert. That'll sort out the problem i'm having. Mhairi

they're actually 21 days apart, and the second one is the legal registration, from the Scottish GRO. So the first would be spot-on to be notice of intention
