Please if anyone can help me I am trying to find out about the inscription and how it was worded on the Aldgate Pump. Of course it has long been demolished but I understand the inscription was in honour to my Great Grandfather George Sturgeon who served as a Policeman. If anyone can help I would appreciate hearing from you.

I tried googling and one of the first links came up with a picture - but not enough definition to read any inscription. Christine

If it's demolished what's this talking about? City Of London Aldgate Pump, junction of Aldgate, Fenchurch Street and Leadenhall Street, EC3 (AAP00) TQ 3347 8111 Aldgate Pump, junction of Aldgate, Fenchurch Street and Leadenhall Street, EC3 TQ 3347 8111 MoLAS (Andrew Westman) standing structure survey September-October 2000 Corporation of London AAP00 The exterior and interior of this roadside pump, which is statutorily listed Grade 2, were recorded by photography and measured drawings. The internal works are missing. The stone structure is documented as built in the late 18th century, on the site of a medieval well, and was modified in the mid 19th century, probably when it was moved a short distance for road-widening. Marion, Ive been googling for Aldgate Pump and inscriptions and get the impression that there was some sort of notice board by the pump. I should try googling your rellies name and Aldgate Pump to see what comes up.
