Need some help here......FreeBMD has some BMDs....Familysearch has some more BMDs....Ancestry has most BMDs and 1837 has all BMDs? So the best bet if I am looking for a marriage that can't be found around 1902 on the first three is 1837? Or is there another option? Margaret

1837 is the only complete online index. Otherwise you need to go to a library that has the BMD indexes on fiche. Janice

Oops! Just seen you're in Canada. You'll have to go online presumably then or ask on the Records board for someone to look it up for you in a library.

The closest Family History Centre has microfiche for BMDs. Would they be the same ones as 1837? Have to make a pilgramage as the films I ordered are in, so I could check the fiche then. Margaret

Hi Margaret, I would assume that the fiche indexes would be the complete ones. Happy hunting Janice

Thanks Mary. Are you sure? Looking for the marriage of Harris(Harry) Galinsky to Sarah Wolfschen (names as per daughter's 1905 birth certificate); more than likely in the Leeds area. There was a daughter Minnie born in 1903. The info is coming from Sarah's granddaughter; she has not mentioned if there was anyone older than Minnie, or whether she was the first. There was a son who died young, but unknown exactly when. Please don't spend too many credits on this - I don't have an actual date for the wedding. They weren't found on the 1901 census site - I thought I'd found her family as Wolfson, but that Sarah was married to a Mr. Simons. (unless of course you find a Galinsky/Simons marriage!!) Good Luck and Thanks. Margaret

Hi! www(.)familyrelatives(.)org is supposed to hav all the BMDs from 1866 to 1920 transcribed and searchable. It's a pay to view site, but I had a couple of spare credits and looked up 'Galinsky' marriages. The only ones in Leeds between 1890 and 1910 are: Surname Forename1 District Page No Event Quarter Year View Image Galinsky Barnett Leeds.9b 1254 Marriage 3 1907 Galinsky Fanny Leeds.9b 990 Marriage 4 1909 Galinsky Isaac Leeds.9b 1111 Marriage 3 1908 Galinsky Jake Leeds.9b 751 Marriage 1 1910 Galinsky Karl Leeds.9b 1021 Marriage 4 1904 Galinsky Ralph Leeds.9b 1197 Marriage 3 1904 There is no record of Harry Galinsky (or anything like Harry). There is no Wolfschen (or Wolfchen) recorded between 1890 and 1910. Just a thought...these are presumably German or Polish surnames. Could they have been immigrants, who married before they arrived in England? Sorry couldn't be more help, but at least you know not to spend your money on familyrelatives!

You have to watch for the spelling Galinski as well, as they're interchangeable. Doesn't help with the marriage though. Very few in FreeBMD before 1890, then there's a sudden rush, in Leeds and the East End. Half a dozen families in Leeds in 1901, all Russian Jewish immigrants, living in areas that were heavily settled by Russian Jews The heads include a Harris and a Harry, neither married to a Sarah. Maybe she's a second wife, but I can't see a death for a first wife. But Galinsky deaths in Leeds are suspiciously rare. I can't see the marriage registrations for the married couples in Leeds in 1901. And I can't see the people who married after 1901, unless they married very young. More immigrants may have arrived. I think you need help from people who know more about this community, say the Jewish Genealogical Society.

It's worth looking on here; http://www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk They don't seem to have yours (yet) but have some (in the 1890-1910 timefame) that may be useful... Had a look at Wolfschens... None, as such, but a sprinkling of WO(O)LFSO(H)Ns in the same period. Christine

Thank you all very much for your help. I don't have a lot of information on this family as yet. This is actually the family of a friend -- I am doing a tree for her for Christmas. I had thought about the family not coming over until after the 1901 census. Her father's family didn't; so I am having a hard time finding anything on them also. What I will do is list all the information you have given, so that if she and her sisters decide to go further, they have a starting point. Margaret
