an ancestor of mine, Eliza Amos and her mother Ann moved from Birmingham to the Mission room, goods station road, tonbridge, kent. They are shown as living there in the 1881 census. She is known to be working as a mission worker, but I don't know who for. Is there anyway of finding out? Could she have been a member of The Salvation Army? Is there anywhere that keeps records of mission workers?

Mandy, just saw this in 'Your Family Tree' The Salvation Army Heritage Centre www1(.)salvationarmy(.)/heritage(.)nsf/home. Apparently a lot of the records were destroyed in the Blitz, still worth a try. Carol 430181

Some nice person from Tonbridge might be able to help you if you put a message on this board. There are hundreds of different mission society's so I would think local knowledge would be the best way to start.

Did you scan back and forwards on that census image as I would have thought at some point it would have said what mission society it was? Nope, just looked only her and her mum living there. Mum working in her seventies? and daughter down as Mission Woman.

Do you have them in 1861 and 1871? In 1861 they were both in Brum and apparently working as warehouse women In 1871 they turn up in Chelsea and mum is working in a warehouse again but daughter is down as a Mission Woman.

A mission woman in London could have been with the London City Mission. They still exist - on Tower Bridge Rd - and their website gives contact details of the archivist there. Janice
