My Mary Elizabeth grandmother was also always called Polly - another complication! Liz

Hi Helen Little Nell & Brenda Polly was commonly the pet for Mary Ann, not Mary etc. Her birth and marriage certificate stated Polly so can't see a reason to say her name was Mary Ann. Also my Nan from the same family was known as Beat and her daughter was Milly. My Nan was christened Milly Beatrice, her daughter as Milly, not Millicent etc. So the use of pet names as christening names seems to run in the family. Anyway - ranting at long dead Government Officials is good for soul!! Lyndy

I know exactly where you are coming from. There are lots of girls called Milly in my family. Nobody is going to tell me that any of them were ever called anything different. Some are baptised Amelia, others Millicent. One Millicent appears on the census as Amelia. Vicars and enumerators were convinced that they knew what the girls were called, but they can never have been known as anything but Milly or Mill.

Transcribers will only write what they think the image says. The image will say whatever the enumerator was TOLD. If the image says Mary Ann then that is what was said/transcribed. Or are you saying the original image said Polly and the transcriber has substituted Mary Ann? Because as far as I can see the transcriber has transgressed - they are meant to record what is written, even if its wrong. And how would s/he know it was Mary Ann and not just Mary, or Marian? nell

My G Grandmother was named Polly. Previous to her marriage, I couldn't find her on any census. I read the threads on Polly being a pet name for Mary Ann etc but my Father assured me her name was Polly. Sent for her marriage cert, sure enough, it was Polly! No mix up there. On later Polly/Mary Ann threads, I posted 'Oh yes - Polly is a proper name'. Got parents names - searched the census - no Polly. Didn't know any siblings names so no help there. Plenty of parents with correct name but no Polly! She had been transcribed as MARY ANN. The enumerators/transcribers obivously thought her parents had given her pet name and decided in their infinate wisdom to correct it. I hate Victorian transcribers/enumerators!! My tip - Develop Second Sight and a Medium's Art in contacting Past Enmumerators and Transcribers Oh - feel light headed but better. Thank you. Lyndy
