My 4xGt Grandfather Charles Duffin chr. South Stoneham 1774 (Father William) married Elizabeth Scorey chr. 10 March 1771 South Stoneham (Father William) on 6 April 1801 at South Stoneham. Charles and Elizabeth had (as far as I know) two sons, William Duffin my 3x Gt Grandfather chr. June 1806 South Stoneham and Charles b. c 1811 South Stoneham.. Charles Duffin died aged 68 on 25th July 1844 at Horton Heath South Stoneham, his occupation was given as labourer and the cause of death was inflammation of the bowels. The informant was Charles Duffin inmate – occupier deceased. (I assume this was his son Charles) . I assumed that therefore Elizabeth had pre-deceased Charles but the only death of an Elizabeth Duffin I can find by searching GRO records on 1837 online and Free BMD is in January 1846 when an Elizabeth Duffin died at the South Stoneham Union from dropsy, the only problem is that she is 55. Charles’s wife Elizabeth would have been 75 by then. The informant was the master of the union. In the ‘occupation’ column it gives wife of Charles Duffin labourer at South Stoneham. I would have suspected a transcription error at GRO except that I have an e mail from Southampton archives telling me that Elizabeth Duffin was buried on 5 January aged 56, she was from the union. In your experience, is it likely that the Union master could have been 20 years out with the age? Everything else ties up and I am unable to think of anything else to prove any different. There is also on the burial index an Elizabeth Duffin aged 48 who died at Bishopstoke August 1821, therefore her birth date would be c1773 Is it likely/possible that the informant gave her age as 55 when she was 75? Your thoughts please on this. Ann glos |
