Yes iam in the same position. Grt grandfather i have his marridge and death and 1871-1881-91-1901 census but no birth reg or baptiam so thinking now the parents i have him with on the 1871 aren't his real parents. Gill

I'm hoping to yet find that baptism. My great great grandfather, Henry appears not to have been christened. I THINK I know who his parents probably were, but if I'm right, ( right surname, only family with that name in the village at that time, 'father' had same trade as young Henry) he was the only one of their children not baptised. I wait replies with anticipation.

Hi gwyneth. I thought it was required before 1837 but might well be wrong. Thought the church would have been more strict about baptisam in those days. Hope someone can put me right on this. Gill

I don't think the vicar would know would he, if they came from another parish and said they had already been christened? I don't think they would have checked. Was it required before 1837? I have a 1837 marriage and I'd love to know the groom's parents.

I am adding into this thread to see what others say later, as I don't know the answer!! I was married in the C of E in 1986, but have not been Christened. They said it was OK because ex-hubby had been.... Merry
