I have been searching for my relative Samuel Hickton for quite some time now, last night I googled Sam Hickton and came up with a dealer in old English pottery that was selling a mug inscribed Sam Hickton Skegby 1779! Not my Sam, we come from Warwick and he was not born until 1826, but wow! I contacted the dealer but he wants 1100 pounds for the mug! That translates to NZ$3500 and somewhat out side of my price range. Bother! Just had to tell someone. Thanks for listening, I am now going outside in the sun to work in the garden and dream of winning Lotto on Saturday. Cheers Christine in NZ

Was this Sam famous? It seems like an awful lot of money for a mug, even if it is more than 200 years old, and since it has a particular name on it, I don't suppose there will be that many people who would be interested in buying it. Kath. x

Hi Christine, good job he wasn't your Sam then at that price. I know I would have been really upset had it been one of my rellies and like you, it would have been out of my reach too. There are so many people out there, who haven't the slightest interest in family research but they sure know how to make a few bob out of those of us who have LOL Just have a look at eBay. Best wishes Jan x

Thanks guys, you are correct, thank goodness he was NOT my Sam! I was looking forward to adding the mug to my collection of Hickton bits and pieces, but being a fan of Antiques Road Show I did suspect that it would be expensive. I did not imagine that expensive! If that Sam was famous, I certainly have not heard of him and in the hunt for my Sam I have had a bit of a look at all the other Hickton families. I suspect the fact that the mug was named and dated, any name and date, would add to its value. Beautiful spring morning out there and the garden really does call!! Cheers Christine in NZ
