Does anyone know if the Newington Necropolis is still there and if so where it is exactly? I can't find whether there are any MI's online or whether they are held at register house in Edinburgh. Any info would be gratefully received. Thanks Karen |

Hi, Karen, Try e-mailing Edinburg Library - [email protected] (Tel 0131 242 8030) However, these details are from 2002, so may not still be current. If, so try the web www.ediburgh.gov.uk 'Necropolis' is greek for 'city of the dead' - used mainly in Scotland Happy hunting Anne |

Susanne Thank you for replying. I've only just noticed that on a death certificate I have that there is an extra column which gives the place of burial. I looked at the certificate in the first place because he is a John SIMM and has the same parents as one of my line. They moved from Northumberland to Scotland. I do have a John Simm in that family but had never found him in Scotland so far. Got the certificate but apart from confirming the parents it says 'married' and 'usual residence Glasgow' - not very helpful! Thought I was at a dead end of trying to prove he was this elder brother but then realised if he has a grave stone it may say more. So my plan was to see if there is a list of burials anywhere for Newington. I'm in Glasgow so not too far away. However if you were able to find anything out for me I would be very, very grateful - he died in 1856 if that helps narrow down which cemetary would have been used in Newington. Karen |

Anne Thank you for the response. I've tried the web site but couldn't find anything, but I'll give the phone number you gave me a try. Even if I can establish where the Newington Necropolis is then that would help. Thanks for the info. Karen |
