As some of you know I am doing some transcribing. Getting on well now with the Latin ,thanks to the help of the web sites given.Know about the FF etc.Oh but some of the writting.Still it is a wonder they could write at all in 1560. I am real stuck with a letter which looks like a O with a line though.top to bottom and side to side. - odlinge.is one of the surnames .It is not a O,G,or a C.Any one got any idea,s please.I have worked out his fancy W,N,E,J ,S,and D is back to front, but realy stuck with this one. Thank you Daphne

Daphne That sounds like a C. Are you sure he isn't using two forms of the same letter? (Having Codlings in my family)

NB If it's parish registers that you are looking at, then this should be a copy, not the original, transcribed circa 1598. Sometimes the registers actually state this.

It is a film I am transcribing .It is a film of parish records from 1555 .It is the books of the parish.or two villiages . I did wonder if it was a C,but is differnt from his other C.Will look at where he used it before. Thank you Daphne

It does sound as if it could be a C or a G. Have you looked at the sample Wills on Documents Online? http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/wills-sample.asp The upper-case G is pretty circular, with an ornamental vertical line, plus the crossing stroke which converts it from C to G. On the other hand CODLING is a more common surname than GODLING (which does appear to exist). Christine
