One thick envelope full of photocopies from the Norfolk Record Office has arrived. It seemed extravagant at the time, but I have baptisms, marriages and burials from my all-time favourite parish registers for Edgefield, Norfolk. I may miss the smell and the feel of the actual books, but it is such a treat to be able to study a page at my leisure.

Hi, Brenda, A lot of my rellies come from Norfolk, but as I live in the North east, it is not possible for me to get to Norfolk. What sort of things can I request from the Norfolk Record office, please? this is a new idea to me. Thanks Anne

Hi Anne Have a look at the Norfolk Record Office website to see which registers they hold. The list is very out of date. It used to be the case that the Mormons were not allowed access to Norfolk Parish Registers, so that everything that appeared on the IGI came from transcripts, rather than direct indexing by the Mormons. It would be worth checking to find out whether there is a LDS library near you and if they have access to microform copies of the records you want. These can be ordered for a modest amount. Up to about 1994, the registers were being put onto microfiche and if you know the parish, you can buy copies of the fiche. Susequent filming has been onto microfilm and this does not appear to be for sale. I had a couple of glorious sessions in the Record Office, so found the entries and then asked for copies. I don't know whether they'd look things up for you, but it would tell you on the website. Where in Norfolk do your people come from? My Norfolk people were mainly ag labs, very poor, and lots of them went up to Sunderland, Gateshead etc. Some became seamen, others miners. And yes, Marjorie, it is like a very large bar of chocolate, only better, as I'll still have the copies to enjoy next week and the week after.

HI, Branda, thanks for the info. The nearest LDS place is Sunderland, so I'll have to make the journey. I'll check the website first. My rellies come from Aylsham, & Attlebridge. Moved upto Wallsend to get work in the late 1970s. Were ag labs etc, and couldn't write. I always thought that I was a Geordie of many generations, but my g-gradnparents came from Liverpool, Cumbria, The English borders and Norfolk, and most of them were ag labs (icluding a pauper). So I am a righr mixture! Regards Anne
