I have two questions 1st Are the census records for Merchant Navy ships available and if so where are they, can find Royal Navy on most of the census but most of my family are or were Merchant Navy. 2nd I have seen all the great names that so many of you have and I feel jealous, I want one but how do I put one in with my messages and replies, but must be easy to do as a bit of a techno phobic

Hi Srry I can't help with your Navy query but can with the other one.... On the left hand side near the top, you should see 'My Account Details'. If you click on that, then enter your password, it will take you to the screen where you can change your name. Enter any name you like and it's done! Sam x

Re Merchant Navy. When the census was taken for Royal Navy Ships, ships at sea were included in the return and appear either under a separate section or under the home port, depending on which census you are looking at... Merchant ships were only included if they were in UK dock. So you would find an entry for a ship in Southampton or Liverpool or wherever. If the ship was at sea, then tough!! Merry

One of my merchant navy ancestors turned up on the Scottish census of 1891 although he was English and the ship appears to have been in English waters; I can only assume the ship was Scottish-owned. So it might be worth looking at the Scottish censuses too. Kate.

What a shame, I'd love to see my grandfather on a census, he is on the 1881 as a child but obviously must have been at sea on 1891 & 1901. Josie
