A relative of a friend said there were some records from Ellis Island that had been destroyed, possibly by fire, and that was why they were unable to trace the father's family back to Sweden (he changed his name when he came to Canada, but without the records, they don't know what he changed it from). Has anyone heard anything about this? |

From the Timeline section on the Ellis Island site: June 15, 1897 'A fire of undisclosed origin, possibly faulty wiring, completely destroyed the Georgia pine structures on Ellis Island. No one died, but most of the immigration records dating from 1855 were destroyed. In five years, some 1.5 million immigrants had been processed. While a new, fireproof immigration station was being constructed on Ellis, processing was transferred back to the Barge Office' Does this help? Rose |

Thanks Rose. The immigration date they had for him was around 1892. He went to join his uncle in Minnesota[sp] before heading north into Canada and settling. Looks like his records would have been destroyed. Do you know if there is anywhere else they could check? Margaret |

There are some other immigration records on Ancestry that include the 1892 time period. If you give me some info, I'll see if he appears on any of those records. Rose |

Thanks for the offer Rose. I'll have to check with my friend for the info and get back to you; may not be right away as she is working. OK to send info off-board? Margaret |
