i am trying to trace my family but i seem to be a skeleton in the cupboard, my mother and farther devorced he then went on to marry two more people and had two more children respectivly. The last two children supposedly never new about me and my sister, but by chance i think i may have contacted one of them on this site last week. It was pure accident that this hapened but two days later i read a message asking for advise which i am sure was about me do i carry on with my tree regardless so as not to affend any one do i stop right now before it as started because i only have 6 family names and no leads or info to work on i dont now what to do but never the less any leads i did get off this site have now disappeared. i have copys of birth cert and marriage entrys from 1837 but am stuck before im started, and no relatives to ask.

Lesley If you wish to put living relatives on your tree you need their permission. Contacting/or not your half-sisters is an ethical issue which you have to resolve for yourself. But tracing your family tree back doesn't require any contact - you just need to work back using certificates and census information. nell

Lesley - what a shame that they have not stayed in contact with you, but perhaps this was all a bit of a shock to them and they need time to think about it. Maybe they will get back in touch some time in the future when they have got used to the idea. But if you want to continue tracing your tree back in the meantime, and you are stuck, post up details of where you are stuck and I'm sure we can help. If you don't want to post up the names of the individuals you are stuck on, perhaps because they are still alive?, then if you start a thread worded fairly generally, and if people offer to help, you can send them a private message giving the people's names etc. and ask them to private-message you any replies so they will not appear on the message boards. If you want any help with what you are stuck on at the moment, feel free to send me a message. Good hunting! Kate.
