Did people have to register deaths by law. I am looking for Jeremiah Tattersall's death after 1871 and it is not there.

Just for info: I had always thought that a burial couldn't take place unless a death cert had been shown to the vicar/undertakers etc. In the course of research however, I have found that in the early days of civil reg many deaths were not registered, just like births. The enforcement of compulsory registration occurred in 1875 - the same year as compulsory birth registration. Merry

Hi Melvyn, The age could be out as my Grandads was out by at least 8 years and my Grandmother was the Informant who knew his age. regards June

Hi Melvyn, I have been looking for a death between 1889-1891 and can't find it anywhere at the family records office or a search at the local office, also phoned the cemeteries in the area and no burial record I have looked for over 3 years for this death. I have given up all hope of ever finding it. Someone told me that a certificate of death from the doctor was enough to bury someone. Good luck Margaret

If the death you found is the right place, dont discount it. Often the informant wouldnt really know the age of the deceased and make a guess. And it is an unusual name.
