I have just received a marriage cert from 1839 in which the Brides mother is listed in the father's name column, even though the mother is deceased! I suppose this means that the Bride was illigitimate. I've never come across that before, but it's certainly better than leaving it blank! Thank you Mr Regitrar! |

I have a marriage certificate of 1911, where in the father's name it has Janet ****. The bride's name is also Janet. I am told by a descendant that Janet, the bride, had a father James. Picture the scene. Busy vicar or clerk, pushed for time, making out certificate, - got as far as Ja...... then lost concentration. I hope to check the original entry sometime. |

I had this on my gt grandmother's marriage cert in the father's column 'Illegitimate daughter of Susannah Barnes', which I was very glad of as it made it quite clear she was illegitimate BUT gave me her mother's name so I could be sure I got the right birth cert! nell |
