Right where do i start? Benjamin Nicholson married Harriet Kell in 1856 in Sculcoates in 1856. They went on to have quite a few children, Mary Anne being the eldest.(or so i thought) In 1877 Harriet got ill and died and within about a month or two he re- married the housekeeper. She was called Rebecca Wokes, she came from Broomfleet, and she brought her 13 year old son John George Wokes with her. When i checked the 1871 census i was surprised to see that Ben and Harriet appeared to have a 4 year old daughter called Elizabeth. I then checked 1881 and an Elizabeth Nicholson is listed as a servant at. 1 Laurels grove Sculcoates. In the meantime i decided to do some research on John Wokes, I could not find him in 1881(aged 23) but he appears again in 1891(aged 33) married to an elizabeth. They have a whole load of kids. Anyway, this got me thinking who he married and i checked this out. It appears that he married an Elizabeth Nicholson in 1888. Is this just a coinsident or do you think that he could of married his own step sister? They obviously were not brought up together, as she was in service when he moved into her fathers house. I just need help if someone could double check my facts as its driving me crazy. Regards Wendy

I think he could have married her but you would need to check the parish register or buy the cert for proof. Janice

Perhaps you can find out where the copies/images are of St Paul's, Hull, Parish Registers. Photocopies of Register pages are usually very inexpensive. Perhaps the witnesses' names might give some more clues? It's on the YorkshireBMD site: Yorkshire Marriage indexes for the years: 1888 Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference NICHOLSON Elizabeth WOKES John G St Paul Hull JA/7/362.
